About Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED)
Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED)
is a national-level entrance test administered by IIT Bombay under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It serves as the entry point to Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programmes at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur. UCEED scores are also accepted by several other institutes which have their own admissions.
UCEED tests candidates in visual perception, creativity, design ability, drawing, observation, analytical reasoning, and problem solving. The test is divided into two parts: Part A (computer-based objective examination) and Part B (drawing and design ability). Part B is only assessed for candidates who qualify Part A. The final rank is based on combined performance in both sections.
Students who have passed or are appearing for Class 12 in any stream can apply. There are two consecutive attempts with a maximum of two attempts, subject to category-specific age criteria. Participating IITs conduct admissions through a centralized Joint Seat Allotment process without portfolio review or personal interview.

UCEED Entrance Exam Pattern
The UCEED 2026 exam is conducted in a single session — 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon — with a total duration of 3 hours. The exam has two mandatory parts and is worth a total of 300 marks.
Part A — Computer-Based Test (CBT) | 2 hours | 200 marks | 57 questions
- Section 1 — NAT (Numerical Answer Type): 14 questions × 4 marks = 56 marks. Answer is a number typed using virtual keyboard. No negative marking.
- Section 2 — MSQ (Multiple Select Questions): 15 questions × 4 marks = 60 marks. One or more correct options from four choices. Partial marking applicable. No negative marking for wrong answers.
- Section 3 — MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions): 28 questions × 3 marks = 84 marks. Single correct answer from four options. Negative marking: −0.71 marks per wrong answer.
Part A Syllabus
Visualization and spatial reasoning, Practical and scientific knowledge, Observation and design sensitivity, Environmental and social awareness, Analytical and logical reasoning, Language and creativity.
Candidates must clear the Part A cutoff (released category-wise) for their Part B to be evaluated.
Part B — Pen-and-Paper Drawing Test | 1 hour | 100 marks | 2 questions
- Question 1: Drawing-based — tests sketching, composition, perspective, proportion, and visual communication skills.
- Question 2: Design Aptitude-based — tests creative thinking, problem-solving, and design reasoning.
- No negative marking in Part B. Candidates must bring their own drawing materials — pencils, pens, and colours.
Final Score & Rank
The merit rank is assigned based on combined performance in Part A and Part B. Candidates with equal total marks are ranked using the tie-break policy: higher Part B score → higher rank; if still tied, higher Part A score → higher rank.
